Senior Adults
Monday
Silver Bucket Singers – Meet weekly at 1:30pm, Room 2005, with a summer break. Singing “just because we love to” and sharing our music with others keeps this group of older singers active. Weekly rehearsals emphasize fellowship and musical improvement without being performance-driven. They sing out in the community 10-12 times a year and occasionally for on-site church events or services. Newcomers are always welcome, but calling ahead is recommended so you don’t visit on a day we are out singing! Contact director Rev. Linda Smith, 696-1033.
Tuesday
Outreach Crafts Group – Meets 2nd Tuesdays at 1:00 pm in Room 214-15. This group makes tray favors or small gifts for various groups outside the church. They also occasionally take fruit baskets to the ill or folks whose activity has become limited. Sitting around the table busily “making things” describes this active group who enjoy helping others. Call Doris Browne at 492-2396 to get involved.
Movie Matinee – On 3rd Tuesdays at 1:00 pm, watch a good movie and have free popcorn and sodas with others who enjoy good entertainment and good fellowship. Occasional disruptions in the schedule make it a good idea to call ahead before coming the first time. Call Doris Browne at 492-2396.
PrimeTimer Potluck Dinner – Fourth Tuesdays, 6:00pm, John Wesley Room – This is the original senior adult group at University, folks who enjoy a covered dish meal together and hear an entertaining or informative program every month. This is a great place to make new friends, and an easy place to get acquainted with our senior adult ministry if you are still working during the day.
Line Dancing – Sponsored by Methodist Healthcare and our Health and Wellness Ministry, this group is mostly attended by over-60’s. Beginners meet every Tuesday 5:30-6:30 pm and Intermediates from 6:30-7:30 pm, both in Room 1001. All ages are welcome – it’s fun and good exercise! Call Earline Richardson, 696-4432.
Thursday
Games Day – Every Thursday at 9:30am, a group gathers to play Mexican Train dominoes, which can be played with any number at the table. Other games are welcome, if a whole table can be formed. Call Jack Pool, 697-7144, for location and more information.
Lunch Bunch – Every week September through May, beginning at 11:45am, a tasty and nutritious lunch cooked by volunteer teams is served in the gym by Helping Hands volunteers. Make a reservation by Tuesday noon for the $3.00 lunch, then come and enjoy good fellowship along with good food! There is not a weekly program, but special occasions throughout the year include Christmas music presented by our day school children, an annual anniversary party honoring those married 50 years or more, and the springtime “Readers’ Restaurant” where kindergartners come to show off their new reading skills for us.
PrimeChimers – This musical group meets weekly at 1:00pm in Room 2002, with a summer break. They play handchimes and have a great time doing it! Some music reading skills (especially counting) are very helpful, though some of our chimers have learned from the very beginning. The group plays at area retirement, assisted living and nursing homes, as well as providing occasional music for church events. They always encourage newcomers to start chiming, since substitute and occasional replacement chimers are often needed. It is never too late to learn something new! Contact director Rev. Linda Smith, 696-1033.
And there’s more…
“Fix-It Squad” Home Maintencance – We have volunteers who do minor home repairs and “honey-dos”. They fix leaky faucets, change light bulbs and batteries, turn mattresses, etc. You furnish the materials and they do the work. There is no charge, though donations to your favorite church project are welcome. Call Arlene Clark, 479-1188 to request assistance or to volunteer as a worker.
Day Trips and Extended Travel – Day trips about once a month include destinations such as museums, concerts, plays, the San Antonio Botanical Gardens, historic sites, and more. They are announced in the monthly newsletter, on the second-floor bulletin board (near Room 201), and at other events. Hours and costs vary. Occasional extended travel is organized with senior adults in mind, though all ages are welcome to travel with us. Currently organizing is a May 2010 “Splendors of Eastern Europe” trip that includes the world-famous Passion Play in Oberammergau, Germany. In the past, groups have gone to Alaska, Europe, Travels of Paul (Greece & Turkey), New England (fall leaves), and Branson, MO.
Newsletter – A monthly newsletter describes activities and gives sign-up information. It is e-mailed to all age 60 and over for whom we have a birthdate and a current e-mail address. In addition, paper copies are available at all the literature-distribution desks around the church campus. To be added to the e-mail list, contact ___________________ with your birthdate and current e-mail address.
